Former Chikurin-in Temple

Category: Unique Venues

The former Chikurin-in Temple was one of the former ""satobo,"" which were retreats for monks of the nearby Enryaku-ji Temple. The residence has a 3,300㎡ garden located southwest of the main building which is designated as a national place of scenic beauty, and two tea houses and an arbor (""Azumaya"" in Japanese) built in the Taisho Era (1912), which are designated cultural properties of Otsu City.

The garden, which uses the backdrop of Mt. Hachioji as a borrowed landscape, has a waterfall arrangement and artificial hill, as well as trees and well-kept moss in the circular garden which draw in the clear stream of the Omiya River to create a tranquil atmosphere.

The main building and tea ceremony room consist of 30 tatami mats as flooring and are equipped with a high-speed telecommunications environment that can be used for a variety of purposes, including hybrid conferences, lectures, and exhibitions.

The property also offers easy access to Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the nearby area of Sakamoto, which has developed a unique atmosphere as a gateway town which leads to the temple.

From the Facility Representative

Holding a MICE event in this historical and cultural space surrounded by the views of a 3,300㎡ nationally recognized scenic garden and the sounds of the flowing Omiya River will be a memorable experience for both domestic and international MICE participants.
Both the main building and the tea ceremony room permit eating and drinking, so small receptions and parties are also possible. We look forward to welcoming you to the Sakamoto area, which still retains its remarkable historical landscape.
